Apps for our phones help us in so many ways; it’s no wonder there are wonderful apps for hiking and camping!
It’s no wonder there are amazing, highly integrative apps for hiking and camping.
I want to share with you my four absolute favorite apps I use almost every day! I use these apps for hiking and camping, planning trips, researching new areas, and discovering places I didn’t know where there to be explored.
4 Must-Have Apps
The Outbound App happens to be one of my very favorite app! The Outbound is essential; a social media like network for people who love adventure and the outdoors! I was very excited when I discovered this gem several months back!
I love that within this app I can find a plethora of activities, stories, trails, camping spots, and much more! Another feature I love about this app is the ability for the app to pick up outdoor adventure near my location.
The app is free and you can even create board type lists to save activities and trails. You create Pinterest-like boards that you can name and save these activities into for later planning.
I’m a contributing writer to The Outbound where I share outdoor related activities, stories, and experiences that I’ve had in the outdoors. Several people contribute great information and comment on trails, campgrounds, and rivers about current conditions or issues with the provided maps.
Handy details will include skill level information, what season the activity/destination is good for, activities available to do in the area, special features, route types, and mileage. Lots of locations have maps as well. This app is free!
Having access to over 50,000 trails is very important to me. I know, I know; it’s a lot. But, having the ability to have access to this many trails ensures me that wherever I am, I will never be without a trail to hike on. AllTrails is an amazing app that allows you to explore trails that are near your current location.
Like The Outbound, you can save favorite trails for later planning of hiking and camping trips. There are several features that I appreciate in the AllTrails App and I’m sure you will too!
You have the ability to receive driving directions to trailheads within the app, check-in and record your hike, and you can even save several types of maps for offline use! Tags are added to most trails and give you great information about whether a trail is pet or kid friendly and if there is camping nearby or on the trail.
Milage for trails is also given within this app, along with elevation gain; which I love! Another amazing feature is you are able to see a 4-day weather forecast for your planned trail location and can really gain some insight on what clothing and gear you’ll want to bring along.
Photos, reviews, and insight from other hikers are given on the trails so you will be able to have the most accurate information; if someone has made any new comments on the trails page. While the app is free, if you want access to maps and the ability to download them for off-line use, a Pro Subscription is required. I highly recommend purchasing the Pro Subscription! $29.99/year is a small price to pay to be able to have access to over 50,000 trails and all the amazing features and benefits the AllTrails App has to offer.
MapMyHike App is a great tool to have if you’re wanting to record and keep track of your fitness while you are hiking. The app allows you to, essentially, map your hike!
The app gives you the ability to track every mile and gives you feedback on how to improve your performance. You will receive information on miles hiked, the pace you kept, calories burned, and elevation. I love that you have the ability to link up other apps with this one including, MyFitnessPal and Fitbit!
While my main focus of being outdoors and engaging in outdoor activities is for the joy of it; I do like knowing how my fitness and overall health is improving with these activities and this app really allows for me to set goals and see accomplishments in real time.
This app is free as well; however, you do have the ability to upgrade to a pro subscription within the app to have access to additional features.
CampFinder App Is my last favorite app for you. This great little tool gives you the ability to find camping spots wherever you are!
Not only are you able to find primitive camping spots, but, you can even find RV parks or campgrounds with RV accessibility. I love that feature since we travel in our RV a lot!
You have a few features in this app that make it nice; toggling through filters allow for the app to find the type of camping you’re looking for near you. You can search by your current location, by name of town & state, or by name of a campground.
The app gives you information on; reviews, pictures, rates, distance from your current location, campground phone number & website, information on the sites, facilities & services, recreation information, and policies of the campground.
The app even allows you to enter the dates you’re needing and will let you know if a camping spot is available; which is super handy! I love using this app before heading out on a trip or even while on the road; when you can go no longer and need a place to stay!
