Heather’s Choice Backpacking Meals for
Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to try out some backpacking meals! Now, these are not your average backpacking meals at all! They are Paleo friendly, gluten free, soy free, and full of wholesome nutrition.
When searching for backpacking meals I ran into the problem of never being able to find meals that were not full of artificial junk and preservatives. I also became concerned with the number of carbohydrates that were not low-glycemic and slow-releasing.
While I like to stay low in the carbohydrate sector, I know it’s important to obtain more carbs while hiking or backpacking. You’re burning up a lot of energy doing these activities!
Heather’s Choice popped up on my radar when I was searching for these meals of mythical proportion that I was trying to find and knew I had to try Heather’s Choice out! I was equally concerned about the latter and wondered if the meals would upset my sensitive stomach. Nothing is worse than having tummy troubles while in the wild!
I partnered up with Heather’s Choice to bring you an honest, unbiased review after tasting these backpacking meals! As always, I’m 100% open and transparent with my readers, I did recieve Heather’s Choice meals for this sponsored post. First off, considering Heather’s Choice meals are shipped from Alaska, I was highly impressed with the quick shipping! I am not sure if this will happen every time. But, from Alaska to Colorado they arrived in my PO Box in less than one week!
The customer service that is offered by Heather is amazing! While Heather’s Choice is still a small company, but with a very loyal customer base, her service to customers was amazing. She answered every question I asked promtly and treated me as a human, not just another order to fill.
I was surprised when I opened my package of goodies and realized that every product I was sent had my two absolute favorite ingredients: chocolate and coffee! It was almost as if she did her research on me! Either that or intuition!
I am a packaging person. Meaning I want whatever I buy to have amazing packaging and for it to be multi-purpose!
The packaging material in which the food came in felt sturdy and could withstand a beating and boiling water!
I also noticed the packages were sealable, which was super nice. I liked that after adding boiling water I could reseal the package and allow the water to steam inside and rehydrate the meals! This resealing feature would also be handy if you cannot eat the whole meal at once, which was something I ran into.
The packages ability to free stand was also amazing! There was no worry about having to prop your meal up against something or worry about it falling over. The packages I received stood up on their own with boiling water and all.
Upon opening the packages of the meals I could actually smell something amazing – food. Ironic? There have been times when I’ve opened backpacking meals and there was something off about them. They didn’t have the best smell and I could really tell what was in them.
At first sight, I could see the actual ingredients in Heather’s Choice meals and I could smell all of the ingredients in which she listed.
It was incredible! I knew these meals would be my go-to for backpacking adventures for sure; even before tasting them.
I could see the chia seeds, the tomatoes, the coconut, the sweet potatoes, etc.
The package of Dark Chocolate Chili was amazing! There were actual chunks of meat in this bad boy! It wasn’t just bits of food that would soon turn into an edible, soupy goo.
The Cherry Cocoa Nib breakfast was equally impressive. The smell of cherry and dark chocolate and the slightest hint of espresso was amazing. At first smell, I thought this breakfast would be far too sweet, especially on an empty stomach early in the morning.
The Black Espresso Packaroons! Awe, I knew these would be my absolute favorite and there smell was heavenly. I was worried at first they would be too dry, but I was totally mistaken.
The Black Espresso Packaroons were INCREDIBLE! Like I stated above I was afraid these would be too dry, I was mistaken! These Packaroons melt in your mouth, just like a macaroon should!
The dehydrated goodness of coconut, cocoa, and espresso mixed together was one of the best snacks I’ve had and I cannot wait to get these on the trail. Sadly, they may not make it to a trail … I may eat them all!
I was also slightly concerned that the Packaroons would not be sweet enough, but it was a perfect balance. These are NOT overly sweet at all. The perfect balance of bitter and sweet is there.
They are also the perfect snack size! Two comes in this package and depending on your caloric needs you could have one mid morning and the other in the afternoon. The packaging is resealable making it easy to keep them stored well.
This breakfast was super filling! With the delicious ingredients of cocoa, cherries, hemp and chia seeds, buckwheat, and a hint of espresso makes this cereal awesome! I was worried that I would always have to resort to eating oatmeal on the trail! Not anymore!
I didn’t measure the amount of hot water I added to this meal, but I did cover the ingredients slightly, stirred well, resealed, and set aside for 5 minutes.
After the 5 minutes, I returned to my breakfast. After opening the package it was still too soupy for me. I stirred again and let set another 5 minutes. Afterward it was perfect! I’m almost wondering if I added a little too much water.
My original thoughts were that this breakfast would be too sweet and chocolaty for first thing in the morning, but it was not. I enjoyed this cherry cocoa nib breakfast very much! I was able to consume about half and then eat the rest later. Although, if I had been out in the wilderness hiking and backpacking I probably could have eaten the entire thing!
I was also surprised that after even a half hour the package was able to keep the meal warm! Which I loved. I was concerned that the meals would become cold too quickly, but I was wrong.
At first taste, my thoughts were, “HOLY SALT!” There is a large amount of salt, however, keep in mind this is sea salt. This will help with electrolyte loss while backpacking and hiking and will be needed. The taste of salt does wear off after awhile.
This dense and heavy meal did not disappoint and would be a nice warm start to a morning in the forest!
I think I was the most excited to try this meal! I have made a paleo chocolate chili before and was hoping this would be similar to the chili I had made.
Upon opening this meal I was amazed at how large the chunks of meat and vegetable mix was in this package. And honestly I was curious what one of those chunks would taste like dried, and it was pretty good! So, hey, good news, if you have no water to rehydrate they taste good dry!
The chili smelled absolutely amazing! Like heaven! Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, grass-fed bison, hints of chocolate and espresso make this hearty entree something you will totally look forward to eating at the end of a long day hiking.
With this entree, I poured slightly boiling water from my Jetboil inside the package and again just covered the food slightly. I stirred, resealed and set aside for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes I opened and stirred again and resealed for another 10 minutes. After the total of 20 minutes, the meal was fully hydrated and was ready to consume!
I loved the sweet potatoes in this chili. I added a slight sweetness to it that accompanied the chocolate in this chili perfectly! Filling, dense, and delicious. This chili will NOT disappoint.
LIke with the breakfast, the chili stayed nice and warm throughout and again I was not able to finish this completely. I would imagine I would had I been hiking all day.
I LOVE Heather’s Choice Backpacking Meals for Adventuring! I am happy to report that my stomach never turned sour or became upset with these meals which is a huge plus and very important to me. I don’t want to be having to deal with an upset stomach on the trail.
Heather’s Choice meals are more expensive than most meals you will purchase from the stores, however, the ingredient quality is off the charts! Real, whole food ingredients are found in Heather’s Choice meals and that is something that is very, very important to me.
